Doom and Quake Meet Cyberpunk 2077 in Beyond Sunset

These days, it’s all about the nostalgia. And that’s what I get when looking at Beyond Sunset. Modernised for the present day, it still manages to retain that old-school charm that we all know and love. I was instantly reminded of Doom, with the movement mechanics behaving similarly to Quake.

A Blast From the Past

I don’t think cyberpunk themes in video games will ever get old, especially for me. It’s one of my favourite genres in all types of media, so I’m always happy to see something new taking on the ever-popular aesthetic. Soar through neon-soaked cities as the rain pours down, and blast dual-wielding pistols as you fend off humanoid and robotic enemies alike.

The weapon animations are fantastic, and they remind me of those old arcade games I used to play back in the day. This time, you don’t need to worry about wasting an extra coin to have another go for only 5 minutes. You can sit back, relax, and explore to your heart’s content.

While it’s a Doom-like shooter, it also leans into the RPG sphere. With a plethora of ways to improve Lucy’s abilities, including handy weapon upgrades and augments. These augments can be equipped to give you an extra boost when traversing across platforms and buildings.

Wake Up Samurai! We Have a City to Burn

So, what’s Lucy’s story? Well, she’s a “street samurai” – a possible nod to the Samurai rock band in Cyberpunk 2077. She’s on the hunt for the truth after waking up from a state of cryostasis. Her memories are gone, but she’s now more powerful than ever. This determination spurs her on to uncover what’s hiding beneath the surface of Sunset City (inspired by Night City, maybe?).

Still, Cyberpunk 2077 references aside, Beyond Sunset is one of those first-person shooter games that you just have to try for yourself. Even if you haven’t played the original Doom games, or you were never a fan of the intensity of Quake, this stylish game is certainly its own thing.
