Destiny 2 Player Count Falls As Core Issues Persist

2025-11-30

Destiny 2, the popular sci-fi shooter from Bungie, is facing a crisis. The game’s player count on Steam has hit a record low since its launch in 2017. Only about 35,000 players are playing the game on average, with the peak player count only reaching 59,076. This alarming dip in player engagement signals a significant challenge for the game’s ongoing vitality.

Why The Player Count Is Falling

Players are leaving Destiny 2 for several reasons, with two major factors standing out:

Firstly, the Lightfall expansion proved to be a disappointment. Fans and critics alike expressed dissatisfaction with the DLC, citing a weak storyline, a dull new area, and a mediocre raid. It fell short of delivering the anticipated epic conclusion to the Light and Darkness Saga.

Secondly, persistent core problems. Destiny 2 grapples with long-standing issues, including the new player experience with outdated tutorials, technical stability, aggressive monetization, and stagnant core playlists. Bungie’s limited efforts to address these concerns are testing the patience of the player base.

Adding to the woes, 2023 witnessed a stellar year for gaming, pitting Destiny 2 against formidable competitors like Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo 4, Mortal Kombat 1, Starfield, Armored Core 6, and the Resident Evil 4 Remake. These titles offered fresh and thrilling experiences that Destiny 2 struggled to match.

How Can Destiny 2 Recover

It’s possible, but it will take a lot of work. The game needs a new expansion that can wow the fans and fix the core issues. The next DLC, The Final Shape, is rumoured to be delayed from February 2024 to June 2024. If that’s true, Bungie will have to keep the fans engaged with a long and interesting season. Otherwise, Destiny 2 may lose even more players.

If you are interested in keeping Destiny 2: Lightfall alive, it is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. The game challenges you to fight against the Cabal Shadow Legion and use new strand subclasses. The Annual Pass edition includes access to all four seasons of Year 6.
